WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump confirmed that he will be in attendance for former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington D.C. next week.
At the age of 100, Carter passed away on Sunday in Plains, Georgia, more than a year after he was admitted to hospice care and ahead of a New Year’s Eve celebration at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump, 78, informed reporters that he and his wife Melania had received an invitation to the 39th president’s state funeral, which is set for January 9, saying, “I do. I’ll be there. We were invited.”
When asked if he had spoken to any members of the Carter family, the president-elect said, “I’d rather not say.”
The funeral of the longest-living president will be a national day of mourning, according to President Biden, who is scheduled to give Carter’s eulogy in the Washington National Cathedral next week.
