Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — A series of hearings begin today for the teenager accused of reckless homicide in connection with the death of former Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer Cory Proulx.
Representatives for Javarius Hurd are pushing to have the 17-year-old’s case moved to juvenile court, saying it would be unconstitutional to try him as an adult.
Hurd is accused of attacking a female correctional officer by throwing a cup of soap in her face and then physically assaulting her. He fled to the outdoor recreation area, where Proulx tried to restrain him.
Security camera footage shows Hurd lashing out at Proulx, who fell and hit his head on a hard surface. He died a few hours later at a local hospital.
Hurd is also facing two counts of battery by prisoners. He faces up to 72 years in prison if found guilty on all three counts at trial.
The three-day hearings are scheduled to wrap up by Wednesday. It’s unclear when the judge will decide if the case remains in adult court.
Another inmate, Ryan Nyblom, is facing felony murder and battery charges for being a party to the crime. He has entered not guilty pleas and is scheduled to return to court on March 25th. Investigators say he gave Hurd the cup of soap that he threw at the female correctional officer.
