GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Amherst School District has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Green Bay Packers to start a girls’ flag football program.
“We are excited to see high schools in Wisconsin developing and executing their own girls flag pilot leagues,” said Packers Football Outreach Manager Ryan Fencl in a press release. “While many of the participating players are multi-sport athletes, flag football is also opening the door for girls who are still discovering their athletic niche to compete. Since 14 other states already have girls flag as a sanctioned high school sport, it is our goal to have Wisconsin join this list soon. These 20 grant recipient schools, along with others in the state, are helping us make significant strides toward reaching this ultimate goal.”
Amherst is one of 20 districts in Wisconsin to receive a grant and a flag football starter kit courtesy of USA Football. According to the Packers, the money will go to setting up an intermural flag football program or a club team. Others included Oneida Nation High School, Waukesha West High School, and Franklin High School. Four schools in Appleton and five in Milwaukee also received the grants.
The NFL has emphasized youth flag football programs, with all 32 clubs operating youth leagues in their home markets and national competitions being held as part of the Pro Bowl Games.
Flag Football is also scheduled to debut as an Olympic sport when Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Games.
Qualifying recipients must establish either an intermural league with four different teams playing a minimum of four games or a club league of at least three schools playing four games. The league must complete its season by March 2026. Schools can apply for the grants by filling out this form.
