WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A community event scheduled for later this month will seek to educate people about the hazards of sextortion.
The free event called “Protecting Our Youth: Understanding Sextortion” will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at the Grand Theater, which will feature a resource fair at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program from 6-8:00 p.m.
The featured presenter will be John DeMay, whose 17-year-old son committed suicide as a result of a sextortion scheme. He will be introduced by Brittney Bird, who just lost her 15-year-old son Bradyn to the same situation. The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, as well as local law enforcement and mental health specialists, will also be on hand.
This event comes as the Wausau community continues to mourn the loss of D.C. Everest student Bradyn Bohn. As a result, Republican legislators in Madison are circulating “Bradyn’s Law” for co-sponsorship in the State Legislature. Since Bradyn’s death, lawmakers have collaborated with his family and the State Department of Justice to draft legislation that would establish new penalties for sextortion, allow felony homicde charges to be brought against those who commit suicide as part of a sextortion scheme, and make sextortion victims or their families eligible for compensation under the DOJ’s crime victim compensation fund.
Registration for the event is optional, but appreciated. You can do that here.
