Rian Nyblom
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — A Lincoln Hills inmate has pled guilty to an amended charge of battery by prisoners stemming from actions that occurred just before the death of Correctional Officer Corey Proulx last Spring.
Rian Nyblom entered the plea Thursday afternoon in a Lincoln County courtroom. Investigators believe that he gave his cellmate, Javarius Hurd, a cup of soap, which was thrown in the face of a female correctional officer.
That sparked a chain of events that ended when Proulx tried to restrain Hurd in an outdoor recreation area. Investigators say Hurd lashed out, causing Proulx to fall and hit his head on a hard surface. He was hospitalized and died a few hours later.
Hurd’s attorney has entered a not guilty plea for charges including reckless homicide and battery by prisoners. He will return for a scheduling conference on June 19th.
Nyblom had originally been facing felony murder charges for his role in the incident. The plea deal changes that and includes a guilty plea to a second count of battery by prisoners. The 19-year-old will face up to 12 years in prison at sentencing, which is scheduled for August 6th.
