STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Two men from the Fox Valley are accused of retail theft by swapping the barcodes with ones from less expensive items.
Loss prevention specialists at a Stevens Point outdoors store say Cody and Brandon Forbes purchased fish finders valued at more than $3,000 but only paid $130.00 by altering the barcodes. The tactic involves copying codes from cheaper items and then placing them over the barcodes of the more expensive ones.
Both are now facing felony charges for retail theft greater than $5,000 and will appear in court on July 14th to be formally charged. If found guilty, they face up to 6 years in prison.
Officials say similar tactics have been tried at stores in Appleton and Hudson, but it’s unclear if the men are suspects in those incidents as well.
