NEILLSVILLE, WI (WSAU) — An Athens man accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s child entered a not guilty plea to the charge on Tuesday.
Erick Antonio Ruiz Cortez was arraigned on Tuesday, where he waived a reading of the complaint and entered a plea. Investigators say the 37-year-old sexually assaulted the child while their mother wasn’t home, then threatened them to keep quiet about the actions.
Another student informed authorities of the situation early this year, leading to an investigation. Victim’s rights advocates and police interviewed the child before police questioned Ruize Cortez, leading to his arrest in early February.
He’s being held on a $100,000 bond. Further court action is scheduled for August 19th.
