WAUPACA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Spencer Lake Christian Center now has a tunnel to keep campers safe, built in honor of a camper struck by a vehicle.
A project years in the making is finally complete, and the ribbon was cut by Lilly Weiers, the camper who was struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy County Highway E in 2019. since then Lilly has made a full recovery and was back at Spencer Lake to celebrate.
The project holds personal significance for Michel’s Construction, the company that built the tunnel, as the project’s lead contractor shared that one of their own worker’s lost his five-year-old niece in a crosswalk accident. the completed project now allows safe crossing between campgrounds for thousands of campers.
The tunnel runs underneath the road and has floral artwork on the top of both entrances. three Lilly flowers honoring Lilly.
“Its just a blessing that they are not going to be held up in the crosswalk, or anything, and it is beautiful, they did a great job,” said Lilly’s dad, Joseph Weiers.
