Wausau Woodchucks
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI — After the Woodchucks went 6-0 in their longest homestand of the summer, there were questions about whether the Woodchucks could replicate that same success on the road.
Wausau answered those questions by picking up a hard-fought road win over Wisconsin Rapids on Friday night, taking down the Rafters 8-3. It’s Wausau’s seventh consecutive victory, which is the longest win streak for the Woodchucks since they won nine straight in mid-June last season.
The Woodchucks also picked up their eighth win against Wisconsin Rapids this summer. They also picked up their fourth win at Witter Field in their final trip to the venue this summer.
Meanwhile, the Ignite softball team split a doubleheader with La Crosse. The Steam took game one 12-0 in a five-inning, run-rule shortened game. La Crosse jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first frame, sending 13 hitters up to bat. The lead grew in the third and fifth quarters, and Wausau was unable to make it a single-digit deficit, ending the game after five.
Game two of the Wausau Ignite’s doubleheader against the La Crosse Steam was their best offensive outing of the season, as they scored 16 unanswered runs to take a 16-5 victory after just five innings.
The Ignite were on the ropes after the top of the second, as the Steam scorched them for five quick runs. Down and in need of a score to stay in the game, Riley Schwisow (Northwestern State) delivered, belting a solo homer to center field to get the scoring going. The run sparked a massive offensive inning, where Wausau put up 10 runs in their whopping 16 at-bats.
Fans at Athletic Park stayed behind their team as they continued to pour it on with four more runs in the third and another two added in the fourth. Up by 11 in the fifth, Wausau secured the last three outs and were able to shut the door for the run-rule victory.
