GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Packers bolstered their defense on Thursday by acquiring 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys.
Parsons, who was tangled in a contract dispute with the club, has also reportedly agreed to a four-year, $188 million contract extension with $120 million in guaranteed money. The $47 million annual value makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.
His production in Dallas included more than 250 tackles, 52 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and nine pass breakups.
Parsons made it known that he wanted to stay in Dallas by requesting a contract extension early in the offseason, which would have kept him with the team he grew up rooting for. But talks stalled as the Cowboys opened training camp in July, leading to a messy back-and-forth that spilled over into the media in recent weeks. A narrative that included an open letter from Parsons to the organization and its fans on social media, which said, “Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here. I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.”
The 26-year-old Parsons is a two-time all-pro and three-time nominee for the AP Defensive Player of the Year award. His services will cost the Packers two first-round draft picks and three-time Pro Bowl DL Kenny Clark.
Green Bay officially announced the trade at about 5:15 PM with a post on X, saying, “Micah, Weclome to Green Bay.”
