CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Governor Tony Evers made a visit to Wausau East High School yesterday. He visited the Stevens Point Area School District last week.
You didn’t hear about these visits because the governor’s office asks that his public appearances be embargoed by the news media. That means the news media is told about the governor’s event, but is asked not to publicize it in advance.
Why?
Because of what the political left did when Scott Walker was governor.
After Governor Walker signed Act 10 into law, pro-union protestors – often rent-a-mobs – showed up to heckle the governor at every public appearance. The language that was used towards Scott Walker cannot be repeated on this radio station. The low point was when union loud mouths showed up at a Special Olympics event in Stevens Point. As Governor Walker was meeting with the special athletes, he was facing a verbal barrage. Some of the Special Olympians thought the crowd was yelling at them. The event was quickly brought to an end. For Governor Walker’s political opponents, it was a vile, disgraceful scene.
From then on, Governor Walker’s travel schedule was embargoed. His press office didn’t say in advance where he was appearing.
Governor Tony Evers, who is facing no such organized demonstrations, also thinks his travel plans around the state should be kept private. All of them. All the time. In otherwords, the governor never comes face to face with anyone who might protest any of his policies.
The news media should not be an accomplice to this. What is the reason why we – radio, tv, and newspaper reporters, should assist the Governor from having to come face-to-face with anyone who might disagree with him?
I’ve long said that I won’t honor Tony Evers embargo requests. When I learn that the Governor is coming to our area, I will tell you. Someone from the Governor’s office may call up the radio station to scold me. My punishment may be that I’ll be removed from the Governor’s press release list. No matter. I can get the same information about the governor’s appearances from other sources.
There is no reason whatsoever why the governor’s comings and goings should be a secret.
Chris Conley.
