CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – There are two new developments in the case involving Judge Hannah Dugan. She’s charged with obstruction of justice by allowing an illegal immigrant to sneak out of her courtroom using a private hallway near the jury room. She told ICE agents to wait outside the courtroom while the suspect and her lawyer made it down to the street.
The first development, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz has been deported. Good. He was a bad actor, accused of domestic violence. He got into a fight with his roommate.
Flores-Ruiz entered the United State illegally in 2013 and was caught immediately. He came back into the US a few days later, and remained here illegally for 12 years. This is someone who has no respect for our laws, and can’t stay out of trouble with the police despite his legal status.
He was deported last Friday according the the Department of Homeland Security. It’s unclear if he was sent back to Mexico or to some other country.
The other development is more interesting. In a legal filing by Hannah Dugan’s lawyers, she argues that the courthouse’s administrative judge suggested that the private hallway be used. Two weeks earlier Milwaukee County Chief Judge Carl Ashley sent an email saying that courthouses must be safe havens from immigration enforcement.
Oh really?
An email from an administrative judge does not supersede federal law enforcement. ICE agents showed deference by waiting outside the courtroom while their target was allowed to sneak out, And, if Chief Judge Ashley did indeed suggest that the side hallway should be used, then he, too, should face obstruction charges.
What’s happening in crazy-liberal Milwaukee is breathtaking. County judges, the absolute lowest level of the judiciary, are making things up as they go along. ICE agents have every night to enforce immigration law. The courthouse is not some magical place where the law doesn’t apply. Judges who help criminals avoid capture are not only behaving inappropriately, they’re behaving illegally.
