WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A former leader of the Marathon County GOP and local financial planner will be filing to run for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District seat next year.
Wausau Pilot and Review reports that Kevin Hermening is finalizing his candidacy papers and will make a formal announcement in January. In an email to the publication, Hermening said, “I’m not officially in the race yet, but my filing of a Statement of Candidacy on Tuesday is the first of many steps to doing so.”
He adds that his end-of-year campaign finance report will “most assuredly demonstrate a seriousness to this effort by showing a sizable balance cash on hand.”
The seat is open after Tom Tiffany announced his run for Governor. Multiple other Republicans, including Republicans Jessi Ebben, Paul Wassgren, and Michael Alfonso. Democrats in the field include Chris Armstrong, Ginger Murray, and former State Representative Fred Clark.
Hermening’s background also includes time in the US Marine Corps, where he was notably detained for more than a year as part of the Iran hostage crisis. After his release and return to the US, he was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the U.S. State Department’s Award for Valor.
His public service includes time on the Mosinee School Board. He has also run for office multiple times, including two failed bids for Congress in the 1980s and an unsuccessful run for State Assembly in 1990.
