CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – This Sunday is a special day at my church, The Cross in Schofield.
We are celebrating our 10 year anniversary as a congregation.
Our church is unrecognizable today compared to when we started in 2016. Then we were a house church. Sunday morning worship was in the living room of Pastor Yaou Yang and his family’s home. The number of worshipers were few. But the church grew, and eventually rented space at the YWCA building downtown. Today we own our own space, further down the road on Grand Avenue. About 100 people show up each Sunday.
What makes The Cross unique?
Two things come to mind.
First, we are one of the few multi-ethnic churches in the area. We are part Hmong, part Black, part Hispanic, part White and part Native. If you believe, as I do, the Christ’s message and his salvation are universal – for all people in all places – you will have a unique experience with us.
And, our church exists specifically for the downtrodden. Many in our church have been incarcerated, or have been homeless, or addicted, or unemployed. There are many people at The Cross who live lives of salvation today; they would be unrecognizable to people who knew them at other stages of their lives.
So after worship on Sunday, our church members will gather for a feast. We aren’t really celebrating ourselves, although getting our church up-and-running is something we are all very proud of. What we are really celebrating is what God has done for us and through us.
My prayer this Sunday will be that God make our church unrecognizable again over the next 10 years. And that as we celebrate our anniversary, that all honor and glory goes to Him.
