Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The phase two trial for Javairus Hurd has been delayed after numerous potential jurors were removed from the pool.
Court records show that at least a dozen people were struck for various reasons, including one who had a connection to staff at the Lincoln Hills Youth Prison. That prompted officials to cancel the trial, which had been scheduled for February 2nd through the 11th.
The delay will allow the court to repopulate the jury pool. No further hearings were immediately scheduled.
RELATED: Hurd Pleads to Second Degree Homicide
Hurd pled guilty back in January to second-degree reckless homicide, though is claiming mental disease or defect. The Phase two trial will focus on his mental state when he attacked correctional officer Corey Proulx in the spring of 2024, causing him to hit his head on a hard surface.
Proulx was pronounced brain dead a few hours later. The incident began when Hurd threw a cup of soap in the face of a second correctional officer whom he felt had been unfair to him. He then ran into the courtyard, with Proulx following him.
The 17-year-old had been facing a count of first-degree reckless homicide, which was downgraded as part of a plea deal. Another teen, Rian Nybloom, is serving prison time for providing the cup of soapy water that Hurd threw in the face of the officer.
