Paul Wassgren
ASHLAND, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Republican Paul Wassgren is suspending his campaign for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District seat.
WAOW TV reports that Wassgren will step aside to focus on assisting Republican efforts across the state while expanding his involvement in the Catholic Church.
“This election has never been about a position or a paycheck for me – it is about serving Wisconsin families and creating economic opportunities for our state,” Wassgren said. “While I have the resources and message to win this race and be a fierce advocate for our district in Congress, I recognize that a bloody and highly expensive primary will only benefit the Democrats.”
He specifically called for the party to unify behind Tom Tiffany in his run for Governor. “As our next governor, Tom Tiffany will restore common sense and conservative values to Madison,” he said. “I will proudly advocate for him during this critical election year for Wisconsin.”
Wassgren’s move still leaves a crowded field of Republican candidates for the seat, currently held by Tiffany. Among the candidates are Jessi Ebben, Kevin Hermening, Niina Threlfall-Baum, and Michael Alfonso.
Democrats in the race include Ginger Murray, Chris Armstrong, and Fred Clark.
Both parties will hold a primary on August 11th. Winners will advance to the November 3rd midterm election.
