CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – There’s a very heartfelt letter in today’s Wausau Pilot and Review.
A former drug addict says his program, Adult and Teen Challenge, will soon open a 15-bed treatment facility in Central Wisconsin. The full details were not shared in his letter. But this is the type of program that is badly needed in our area. There simply aren’t enough beds for the number of addicts who need to get sober.
You may remember a few years ago my support of the Gospel TLC, a similar program for the drug addicted who have become homeless. I still support their mission.
My church, The Cross on Grand Avenue in Schofield, hosts an addiction recovery meeting each Thursday night. Some of the people who attend are newer members; they’re at the early stages of winning their sobriety. Others are older and have been sober for years. Many say attending meetings helps them stay sober. Others say its rewarding when they can offer support to others.
I am in awe of people who’ve been able to get clean. I sense that fighting through addiction may be the hardest thing they’ll ever do. That’s why I think a faith component to addiction recovery is critical. I can’t image accomplishing the hard things in my life without Jesus Christ. I’m sure leaving drugs are alcohol behind is no different.
Christ loves all of us. He wants us to lead the full life that we’re intended to lead. The church must have a heart for the addict, and must play a role in recovery. Let’s start by praying for those who turn to God for their sobriety.
