WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Marathon County man accused of failing to provide food, water, and sanitary living conditions for dozens of animals was in court last week.
Joseph Carey is facing 21 counts, including eight felonies for the mistreatment of animals, causing death. Investigators say they found multiple animal carcasses on his Stratford property, including dogs and goats.
Officers found two carcasses at his home in the Town of Day, along with several dogs that showed signs of severe malnutrition. That included some animals living among urine and feces. Others were kept outside without easy access to food and water.
Carey reportedly told officers that he was depressed and stopped caring for the dogs, though previous reports show Carey was no stranger to caring for animals. A 2016 story in the Marshfield News Herald highlighted his passion for sled dog racing and outlined his care routine for the animals.
According to the story, Carey participated in races across Wisconsin and Michigan and even took the dogs to Canada.
Carey was given a $5,000 signature bond, which was signed on Friday. Conditions of the bond include not possessing or caring for any animals. Further court action is scheduled for May 13th and 14th.
