Desmond Mayo
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused of attempted homicide will not go to trial in July after one of his defenders was elected as a Circuit Court Judge in April.
Court records show Desmond Mayo will not go to trial as scheduled. During a hearing on Tuesday, Judge Scott Corbett announced that Michael Hughes is no longer eligible to handle the case as he prepares to take over as Branch 3 Judge in August.
Attorney Jay Kronenwetter remains on the case for Mayo.
The 32-year-old is accused of shooting another man during a drug deal, then fleeing the state. The victim managed to drive themselves to the hospital. The victim was able to identify Mayo as the shooter, sparking a multi-state manhunt that ended when the US Marshals took him into custody in Illinois. Since then, he’s been jailed on a $200,000 bond.
His next court appearance is scheduled for July 13th, which was originally slated as the first day of an eight-day trial. The case has been scheduled for trial on at least one other occasion, only to be wiped from the calendar due to “new developments.”
Mayo has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He faces a mandatory life sentence if found guilty on the attempted homicide count alone.
