MINOCQUA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Wisconsin Department of Revenue agents seized about $25,000 worth of canned beer from Minocqua Brewing Company taprooms in Minocqua and Madison.
The Lakeland Times first reported that much of the canned beer from the Minocqua taproom was confiscated by DOR agents and Minocqua police. Owner Kirk Bangstad said in a social media post that all the beer canned and packaged for the company in Illinois was seized from both locations.
Bangstad said the agents took the beer because he accidentally paid about $500 in excise taxes to Illinois instead of Wisconsin. He said both taprooms remain open but have a lot less beer available for now.
Reporters with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed the DOJ is investigating. Still, they didn’t confirm specifics- only noting that state law prohibits beer produced in other states from being sold in Wisconsin without proper permits, a process designed to protect consumers and ensure a fair playing field for all brewers.
Bangstad is no stranger to legal proceedings- and was recently investigated by the feds for comments following the attempted assassination of President Trump this spring.
