WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Pittsville Fire Department’s Heart and Sole walk and run has raised more than $100,000 over 40 years while drawing participants from 10 states.
The event features a two-mile or five-mile course held every July 3 as the kickoff to Independence Day celebrations. More than 75 volunteers staff the race, which winds through local neighborhoods and countryside before finishing at Riverside Park.
The fire department has used the funds to provide local scholarships and purchase equipment, training and personal protective equipment. This year, the department bought new mannequins and AED trainers for Pittsville schools to teach students and staff how to use AEDs and perform CPR.
The race attracts families and organizations that compete as teams. More than 45 local sponsors support the event, which has become one of the largest celebrations in central Wisconsin.
