CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – I’m surprised by all of the political commentary that a socialist wave is rising after this week’s primary results in New York. It’s time to take a deep breath.
Three far-left candidates won the primaries on Tuesday night. All were endorsed by New York’s Mayor Zohran Mandani.
What is there to be surprised about?
Mandani was elected mayor in a landslide, in a city where democrats outnumber republicans almost 9 to 1.
Remember, parts of New York are so densely populated that congressional districts cover mere neighborhoods. Those uber-liberals who voted Mandami for mayor voted for similar candidates for Congress. Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier are closer politically to Illian Omar and Rashida Tallib.
But what did they actually accomplish?
They’re not taking seats away from Republicans. These are overwhelmingly democrat districts that the GOP has no chance of winning. What they accomplished was forcing out two democrat incumbents, Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat. The voters of their districts judged them not to be radical enough. And Espaillat was the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He’s a former illegal immigrant who was seeking a 5th term.
So what really happened? Democrats ate two of their own. Liberal incumbents were defeated by even more liberal radical newcomers.
This isn’t bad news for Republicans. Rational voters will look at the new congressmen from New York and will be reminded why their socialist-communist appeal doesn’t stretch much further than the bluest-of-blue neighborhoods. Voters who haven’t taken leave of these senses will say “that’s not for me.”
