WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Representatives of Beacon Resources went before the Wausau Plan Commission on Tuesday, making their pitch for a conditional use permit for an assisted living facility near the downtown YMCA to complement the Grant Place Senior Living development.
Manager Jeff Stubbe, who is also the director of the Dwight and Linda Davis Foundation, says the 24-bed facility could help keep couples closer together as they age. “The idea is if you’re a resident of Grant Place, and the need arises to [move you] to the Assisted Living facility, you’ll be [at] the top of the waiting list. So if one [spouse] stays at Grant Place and the other goes to Assisted Living, they’ll be somewhat connected.”
The proposed complex is also in proximity to The Landing at the YMCA, which has completed a significant expansion necessitated by growing membership.
The project was announced in January and has been so well-received that Stubbe says some units have already been spoken for. “Right now, we don’t have any legal contracts or anything, because we haven’t even signed contracts to build the facility. But we have had quite a bit of interest. We have quite a few names on units; first come, first served.”

He adds that they didn’t plan to market the facility this early in the process, but once the renderings were unveiled, they immediately began hearing from interested tenants.
No one spoke for or against the Senior Living facility, which requires a conditional use permit. City Staff will analyze the proposal and bring a recommendation back to the Commission in August. As for Grant Place, planned as a seven-story, 70-unit development, Stubbe says once the site is cleared, construction won’t be far behind. “Grant Place will start construction in mid-August, andm aybe a month later, the Assisted Living facility will start.”
Stubbe adds that the goal is to have both buildings completed within a few weeks of each other, so new residents don’t have to deal with construction activity outside their windows.
