MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A former staffer at the Greenheck Turner Community Center has reached a plea deal for child enticement and sexual assault, stemming from his time as an assistant track coach in the Milwaukee area.
Bennet Schmitz pleaded guilty to the felony counts during a court appearance on Wednesday. Prosecutors then dismissed a third charge for exposing intimate body parts to a child. Charges stem from a report out of Greenfield, where a student shared concerns about the 24-year-old’s behavior with a “trusted staff member,” prompting the investigation.
Officials in Greenfield add that Schmitz was not a licensed educator and did pass all background checks before he began his tenure as a track coach. He left the school in 2024 and had been working as a recreation coordinator at GTCC, where district officials also emphasized that he was not a licensed educator and that he passed their background checks. As soon as they were made aware of the accusations, they deactivated his key cards and devices.
D.C. Everest Superintendent Casey Nye also noted that the incident in question did not involve an Everest student. Officials in Greenfield said they were only aware of any additional complaints against Schmitz.
Sentencing was scheduled for September 24th. Schmitz will face up to 31 years in the state prison system and $110,000 in fines.
