LEOLA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) Officials in Adams County have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy Monday in the Town of Leola.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said Brian P. Conrad, 48, of Hancock, died after the confrontation. The sheriff’s office said Conrad refused commands to drop his gun and walked toward law enforcement.
Dispatch received a 911 call just after 5 p.m. on July 27 from someone reporting their neighbor was “going crazy” and “waving a gun” toward the caller and their family in the 600 block of Third Avenue. The caller described the armed man and was told to go inside for safety.
A deputy arrived and saw a man matching the description standing in a field with a handgun. The deputy and a Town of Rome police officer gave verbal commands to drop the weapon, but the man refused to comply. He walked back toward his property and temporarily went out of sight. The man later came out of his home still holding the firearm and walked into the roadway, turning toward the deputy’s location. The deputy then fired one round from his department-issued rifle, striking the man.
Law enforcement began first aid immediately. Waushara County EMS had already been called to stage nearby due to the high-risk situation and was summoned to the scene to help. Life-saving measures were performed, but the man died at the scene. His handgun was recovered next to him.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and being assisted by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office. Once the investigation is complete the case will be turned over to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office for review.
