WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Fire Department says no serious injuries were reported as crews battled two structure fires Tuesday afternoon.
The first fire was reported at about 5:00 PM in an apartment building on Rachel Lane. Crews from all three stations responded and executed an interior attack, managing to keep the fire to the kitchen of a vacant unit. No damage was reported in any of the adjoining units, and the fire was deemed to be accidental.
While crews were managing that blaze, a second fire was reported in a home on 13th Drive. An engine and a truck were reassigned to that fire, and mutual aid was called in from SAFER and Riverside.
Crews arrived to find flames already coming from the roof of the home. They began an interior attack but quickly changed to an aggressive exterior attack due to conditions inside the home. They managed to put out the flames but not before significant damage was sustained to the roof and second floor of the home. Despite the damage, the structure remains standing.
Two Wausau firefighters were injured and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. They returned to work on Wednesday. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
