MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley is the Democratic nominee for Governor.
With nearly 99% of the vote counted, Crowley was leading Madison-area State Representative Francesca Hong by about .5%, or just under 4,000 votes. Crowley held an event in Milwaukee at 9:00 AM to formally accept the nomination.
He’ll run alongside Sara Godlewski, who ran for the Lieutenant Governor post unopposed.
The result represents a bit of an upset. Most polls suggested that Hong would be the likely winner in Tuesday’s race. “We are fighting to become once more what Wisconsin has always been-a place where our future is determined not by corporations and billionaires, but our future that’s determined by the working-class people who live here,” Hong told supporters on Tuesday.
Crowley may be the unlikelist of winners. He dropped out of the race nearly three weeks ago, and re-entered the contest with the endorsement of Governor Tony Evers, a week later.
Crowley and Godlewski will face Republican nominees Tom Tiffany and David Varnam in November.
