CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – I heard a sermon earlier this month about Noah’s Ark.
The story of the ark and the great flood are taylor made for skeptics.
Really, 40 days of rain until the entire earth was flooded?
Oh really, two of every kind of animal?
You know, other religions also have flood stories. Why should we believe this one?
The story of Noah’s ark is also widely misunderstood. If you think it’s a story about meteorology or zoology, you’re wrong. The story of the great flood is about God’s promise to mankind. A dove returns with an olive branch and God shows Noah a brilliant rainbow… and a new covenant is made between God and his people. Never again will he destroy his creation. God will love his people more than he hates their sins. From that day to this day, we will live under God’s grace.
I have to wonder what immorality was going on in Noah’s day when God decided to start over. Certainly it’s not much different than the sinfulness that infests our society today.
The story of Noah reminds me to be thankful that God’s covenants are enteral. They can be depended on and are never broken.
No, it’s not a story about the weather or about animal husbandry. It’s a story that God’s promises to us can be relied on, from then to the end of time. And for that, I am thankful.
