WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Health Department has confirmed a measles case in a resident.
According to a news release, the unidentified person was exposed to the disease while traveling outside Wisconsin. The individual is self-isolating, and officials say there is no evidence of public exposure. Additionally, the case is not linked to the current outbreak in Southwest Wisconsin, where more than 150 people have come down with the diesase in Grant, Iowa, and Lafyette Counties.
“Measles is a highly contagious illness, and we are carefully monitoring the situation while working with our partners to support the community,” said Marathon County Health Department Health Officer Caitlin Suginaka.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread from person to person through the air and can stay in the air for two hours after a sick person coughs or sneezes.
Symptoms of measles include:
Runny nose
High fever (may be greater than 104°F)
Tiredness
Cough
Red, watery eyes, or conjunctivitis
A red rash with raised bumps that starts at the hairline and moves to the arms and legs three to five days after symptoms begin
