WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Two additional measles cases have been confirmed in Marathon County, bringing the total number of cases to five.
Officials did not provide additional information about the new cases, only saying that there is still no evidence of community spread or exposure locations. Health officials are continuing to monitor each case and conducting follow-up when needed.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread from person to person through the air and can stay in the air for two hours after a sick person coughs or sneezes.
Symptoms of measles include:
Runny nose
High fever (may be greater than 104°F)
Tiredness
Cough
Red, watery eyes, or conjunctivitis
A red rash with raised bumps that starts at the hairline and moves to the arms and legs three to five days after symptoms begin
The first measles case in the county was reported on September 15th. Officials said that case was not connected to an outbreak in the southwest part of the state.
