Stevens Point Fire Department
STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A fire in a downtown Stevens Point mixed-use building is under investigation as potentially criminal.
Fire crews were called to 920 Main Street for smoke and fire coming from an upper-level apartment. By the time they arrived, many residents and shoppers from the first-floor restaurant had evacuated.
The fire was reported at about 9:40 AM, and crews extinguished it shortly after arriving. Paramedics treated one person for injuries. Two tenants are unable to return to their homes and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
The Stevens Point Police Department and Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation will handle the criminal investigation. Officers haven’t said what evidence points to the fire being suspicious.
Assisting agencies included crews from Rudolph, Hull, Plover, Stockton, Amherst, and Iola. The Portage County Sheriff’s Office and Stevens Point PD also assisted with traffic control in the area.
