MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Elections Commission is one of several groups reporting suspicious mail this week.
WEC Administrator Megan Wolfe says her staff found a suspicious envelope Wednesday afternoon. Test results on the mail showed no dangerous substances. The FBI will investigate the item.
Wolfe says the incident will not impact how her staff handles the upcoming midterm. “Let this be very clear: this incident will not shake us,” Wolfe said. “Election officials are fully prepared to handle many challenges, and this will have no impact on our unwavering commitment to deliver a safe and secure election,” Wolfe added. “Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy, and those performing civic duties must never fear for their safety.”
At least three other states received similar packages this week, including Louisiana and Oklahoma. Both discovered envelopes on Tuesday, while authorities intercepted a package addressed to Ohio’s Secretary of State on Wednesday.
A Louisiana election employee was taken to a hospital after opening a package as a precaution, but no evidence of harmful substances was reported.
On Wednesday, Wolfe reissued a memo to local election officials outlining safe mail handling procedures.
