CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – It’s happened again. There’s another case of a biological male athlete competing against girls.
In this case, the high school track and field team that the boy competed with denied a girls team a chance to compete in the state track meet. And this turned a little ugly.
The bio-male ran for Camas High School in Washington State. He started the season running against other boys. He was non-competitive. He finished 76th in a junior varsity track meet. Then he began competing against girls. He’s won once and finished second twice.
In the sectional finals he placed 7th. The 8th place runner, Carlie Garrett, came within a second of beating a male runner. But she feels sorry for the 9th place finisher. The top 8 go on to the state championship. The 9th place girl was denied a chance to compete by a boy.
And that’s when things got ugly. One of the parents from the other team began yelling “that’s a man” at the top of his lungs. His daughter had also spoken out on the unfairness of having to race against the other gender. The male runner didn’t go to the podium after the race, knowing that he’d be heckled.
Tomorrow Washington State voters will have an opportunity to put an end to this farce. There’s a statewide referendum – Initiative 638 – that would bar boys from competing against girls in K through 12 sports. Let’s hope it passes.
