STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Streets around the Stevens Point Post Office have reopened after postal workers discovered a World War II-era grenade in the building.
Police were called to the building at 10:00 AM after a worker reported a “potential explosive device,” according to a news release. The Marathon County Bomb Squad was called to examine the device and discovered there were no explosives inside.
Workers were evacuated from the building as a precaution. Police also called in a bomb-sniffing dog to check the rest of the building before giving the all-clear at around noon. The Federal Post Master and Postal Inspectors have taken over the investigation.
There was no impact on Tuesday’s midterm election, according to Portage County Clerk Maria Davis. “Local law enforcement did an incredible job resolving the situation efficiently and thoroughly to ensure there was no threat to the public and that operations could resume as quickly as possible,” said Davis in a press release. “I have been in communication with both local law enforcement and the Stevens Point Post Office to confirm that absentee ballots will not be affected on Election Day.”
