GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Green Bay Packers have begun the restructuring of contracts to get their salary cap down starting with nose tackle Kenny Clark.
The Packers will need to restructure a number of player contracts before March 16th when they need to comply with the league’s 2022 salary cap limit of $208.2 million. The Packers were about $50 million over the cap entering the off-season.
They also would like to restructure contracts in an effort to keep both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams and try and keep as many veterans on the roster as they can to make another playoff run.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the team took all but $1.035 million of Clark’s deal and turned it into a signing bonus which allows it to be spread out over the remaining years of the contract. The team also added two voidable years on top of the remaining three years of the contract.
The move saves the team over $10 million in cap space.
Other restructures that could be coming include David Bakhtiari, Preston Smith, Adrian Amos, Billy Turner, Aaron Jones and Dean Lowry. They will also have to make decisions on players like Zadarius Smith and Mason Crosby.
