WIFC celebrating their 50th birthday this month
1980's jingle package
from 9 years ago
I was sitting in the WIFC studio with Jim “The Duke of Madness” Owen before my first professional airshift in the winter of 1975-76 and he asked me if I had thought of an on-air name. Most DJs used different names on the air (I think so if they got arrested their air names wouldnt appear in the paper). I happened to be looking at a Carole King album at the time. It was short and easy to spit out so Tom King I became. First song I played was 'King of Nothing” by Seals & Crofts.
The Duke of Madness was a cool cat. I learned alot about the business and music from him. He let a pesky 18 year old hang out in the studio and just soak up what he did. I havent heard whatever happened to him. Anybody know?
The lineup on WIFC that year was pretty strong. Sebastian Oliver Stone did mornings (playing the hits while you spray your pits), Tom Collins was the mid day guy and PD, The Duke did afternoons and the Incredible Hud, Tom Hudson did nights. He was legendary for how much he could eat. The studio would be littered with McDonalds bags after his shift. The Office Bar, on Grand Ave where the police station is now located, had a huge sandwich named after him. The Office was also the place where I had my first underage drink with Mike Green and Jim Fabiano.
Couldnt find one of my own WKAU airchecks from 1979-80 but I worked with Mark Ellis, Dan Dennis, Rich Allen and the gang for a year. Great station with the studio in the middle of a Kaukauna cornfield that is now subdivisions and strip malls.

Quotes Of The Day
“It's amazing how many people Trump has told us can't be trusted: The press. FBI and CIA. Federal judges. Our allies. Trump's ex-wives, biographers, and former advisors. The Fed. Scientists. In fact, according to him, Trump is virtually the last trustworthy person on Earth. Hm.”-Steve Silberman
“Maybe part of the problem is that calling it “climate change” doesn’t sound urgent enough to rich people. How about we call it “it’s gonna be too hot for you to golf.””-Whitney Cummings
“Christians who vote for Trump are showing either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”-Nate Lerner
Hey Fellow Americans,
This is Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark. She told Trump to shove his desire to buy Greenland up his ass and is now being rewarded by not having to meet him. That is a great example of a strong woman beating Trump. Take notice how easy it is.
