GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers are still attempting to get the value they want for the four-time NFL MVP before trading him, nearly two weeks after Aaron Rodgers publicly announced his intention to play for the New York Jets in 2023.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the protections on a draft pick in 2024 in the event that Aaron Rodgers retires after the current season are the main issue that has the Jets and Packers “stuck” in negotiations right now.
A deal between the #Packers and #Jets to swap Aaron Rodgers for two high draft picks is taking shape. But one lingering hangup is whether the Packers will agree to some draft “give back” protection if Rodgers doesn’t play in the 2024 season. Details: https://t.co/DmpXtuKwf2

“A sticking point in the talks is the Jets seeking an element of protection built into the trade, specifically one that sends some 2025 draft compensation to New York from Green Bay if Rodgers does not play in 2024 and beyond,” Robinson wrote.
The current trade focus is on a second-round pick in 2023 and a second-round pick in 2024 that could become a first-round pick with “achievable” team performance, according to Robinson.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Monday that he isn’t necessarily looking for a first-round pick in exchange for Rodgers, but there is no timetable for a deal to be completed.
Gutekunst also stated that “all options are on the table” in terms of Rodgers possibly returning to Green Bay, though that does not appear to be the case.
