MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Badgers men’s and women’s hockey teams may be heading outdoors this winter for the first time in more than a decade.
Both Wisconsin hockey teams are expected to be members of a Big Ten initiative, according to sources who spoke to Badgers Extra, that aims to hold games at Wrigley Field following the NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues at the home of Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs on December 31st.
The conference has not released any official information on the matter, but according to sources who spoke to the outlet, there will be three Big Ten men’s hockey matches and one women’s hockey match between Ohio State and Wisconsin. The sources also stated that the dates for the games are yet to be finalized, but the tournament is expected to be in January 2025, and the participating men’s teams will be Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State.
The Badgers men have previously participated in neutral-site games in Chicago, one of which took place during the Hockey City Classic on February 17, 2013, where they won 3-2 at Soldier Field against No. 2 Minnesota and would be the women’s first outdoor matchup since 2010.
