MADISON, Wis. (June 13, 2024) – Taylor Maroszek of the Pulaski FFA is a Wisconsin Star Farmer finalist.
From a very young age, Taylor would go along with her dad to the barn to check on her piglets. This exposure at an early age led her to want to continue raising pigs. Taylor’s Swine Production SAE started with just two crossbred females and a crossbred boar, and today she has nearly 50 pigs! Her SAE encompasses everything from farrow to finish as she breeds and farrows high-quality gilts and sows to show and sell. From the barn to the show ring, Taylor’s love for her SAE continues to grow, despite challenges.
High mortality rates make raising any type of livestock more challenging and Taylor’s SAE taught her how to persevere by implementing changes to improve her survival rate to 85%, while working to attain a 100% survival rate from birth to weaning. In addition to her changes over time, her responsibilities have increased to look further into genetics for boar selection, along with researching feed and supplements.
Taylor plans to continue being a part of the agriculture industry as she pursues a career in the agricultural communication field hoping to become a livestock photographer. She will continue her degree at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College this fall and transfer to a four-year institution after she receives her degree.
Taylor’s parents are William and Barbara Maroszek. Her advisors are Cedric Pettis, Erin Montgomery, and Kaleb Santy.
