WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – In a letter to Congressional Democrats on Monday, President Biden reaffirmed that he is “firmly committed” to continuing in the 2024 presidential race as fellow Democrats call for a “blitz primary” to replace him.
According to the New York Post, the president faced a firestorm of concerns from fellow Democrats after his CNN debate against former president Trump on June 27, which saw him freeze up, but said he’s not going anywhere, saying, “Now that you have returned from the July 4th recess, I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.”
“I have had extensive conversations with the leadership of the party, elected officials, rank and file members, and most importantly, Democratic voters over the past 10 days or so. I have heard the concerns that people have—their good-faith fears and worries about what is at stake in this election. I am not blind to them,” the letter continued.
Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Mark Takano (D-Calif.), and Joseph D. Morelle (D-NY) expressed their concerns about the survival of the Biden campaign over the holiday weekend in response to his debate performance. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) had urged Biden to end his campaign earlier.
Former President Barack Obama’s ex-top strategist David Axelrod joined those calling for Biden to step aside during an interview on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” saying, “He’s (Biden) not winning this race,” and “If you just look at the data and talk to people around the country, political people around the country, it’s more likely that he’ll lose by a landslide than win narrowly this race.”
According to a DNC memo obtained by Semafor, one strategy that was recently proposed included persuading President Biden to resign as the party’s nominee to allow other contenders to enter the race. The convention’s delegates would then select the official nominee.
The memo reportedly states, “In mid-July, Biden would step down as the Democratic nominee and announce the “blitz primary,” which would be supported by Vice President Kamala Harris. New candidates would have a few days to make their bids. DNC delegates would then select six candidates who would campaign in the month leading up to the convention.”
The latest Morning Consult/Bloomberg swing state poll found that if the election were held today, Biden would lose Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, and Arizona to former President Trump, while Biden would win Wisconsin and Michigan. However, the latest Real Clear Politics polling average shows Trump ahead of Biden in every major swing state, including Wisconsin and Michigan, where he holds a two-percentage-point lead in both states, with the largest leads being in North Carolina (+6.7 points) and Arizona (+6.0 points).
