STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Both Shawano and Portage Counties have reported its first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV).
According to officials from both county health departments, WNV is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito, and not from person to person. The health status of those who were infected has not been made public.
Approximately 80% of people who are infected do not develop symptoms; however, mild symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, rash, and fatigue.
Health officials urge people to apply insect repellent before heading outdoors or wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks to keep mosquitoes away from their skin.
