WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – No one was injured, but some pets died in a fire at a Wausau duplex on Wednesday.
The fire, reported at about 3:00 PM, was limited to a single room. Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to locate the fire’s origin, allowing them to control and extinguish it.
Crews from Station 1 and Station 3 conducted thorough searches and confirmed that no occupants were inside. WAOW TV reports that two cats, one dog, and a lizard did not survive, though two dogs were rescued, according to WFD.
The fire was caused by a heat lamp used for a reptile enclosure. Working smoke alarms alerted the resident, who called 911. WFD says this incident highlights the critical role of functioning smoke alarms in saving lives.
