WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A man who tried to kill his unborn child with a prescription drug has had his trial moved to 2020.
Jeffery Smith of Wisconsin Rapids is facing felony charges of attempted 1st-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child and manufacturing or delivering prescription drugs. His trial for those charges, initially scheduled for November 12th, has been rescheduled to January 14th, 2020.
The charges stem from a January 18th, 2018 incident when police were called to a home on North 3rd Avenue in Wausau. When officers arrived, they talked with a woman who was 20 weeks pregnant who reported a concern that the father of the child, Jeffery Smith, put something in her water bottle. She also said that Smith had previously tried to convince her to get an abortion.
The woman said that Smith came to her home on the night of January 27th. She went to the bathroom for a short time and when she returned she found a residue in the bottom of the water bottle.
Police sent the water bottle to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory to have tests done on it. Results showed the presence of Mifepristone, which is a drug used to terminate a pregnancy. Empty packages of Mifepristone were also found at Smith’s home in Grand Rapids.
Smith is still being held on a $500,000 cash bond. He will return to court on January 7th for a review hearing before his jury trial begins on January 14th.
