SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9FM THE GAME) – I’m delighted for the D.C. Everest seniors, who got a win in their final home game and got to celebrate on their field with their friends and family. Everest was a better them than Hortonville, and it showed in their 30-15 win.
But the game included all the struggles that have been a part of this team’s season. At times, the Evergreens played down to the level of their opponent. The team wasn’t careful with the ball. They played from behind for part of the game. They took advantage of some, but not all, of their chances to put the game out of reach. The biggest area of improvement: fewer penalties.
Jack Bobinski, who is a fine quarterback and will be the team’s starter next year, was a microcosm of how the game went. He accounted for the team’s two biggest plays down-field; a long pass to Preston Miller late in the first quarter that set up the team’s first touchdown, and an even longer throw that led to a sliding catch by Ty Strehlow in the 3rd quarter near the goal line. Bobinski also ran for a touchdown on a 5-yard keeper. But he also turned the ball over twice — an interception on the first offensive play of the game, and a fumble on the first possession of the second half.
Hortonville settled for field goals instead of touchdowns early in the game, putting Everest in an easy-to-get-out-of 6-0 hole. A better team could have scored two touchdowns, and the game would have played out entirely differently.
Everest’s defense was good. Hortonville quarterback Sam Dodd was pressured the entire game, disrupting the timing of most of his longer throws. The Evergreens defensive front won the line of scrimmage for most of the night. Max Buchholz was a defensive stand out with several tackles and two deflected passes at the line.
There is certain to be another game in this year’s football season. The opponent and the date are unknowns. If Everest needs another win to get into the playoffs, they’ll likely schedule a road game next week. If the Evergreens are likely to make the playoffs with a 4-4 record, they’ll be off next week and will play a first round game after a bye. Should Everest miss the playoffs altogether, they’ll probably add a game against another non-playoff team two weeks from now.
The Evergreens will be one of the more dangerous lower seeds if they make the playoffs. They have talent and a good defense. And they still haven’t played their best game.
