MEDFORD, WI (WSAU) — The Taylor County Sheriff’s office says one of the people that were injured in a buggy crash has died from their injuries.
According to a release on Saturday, the mother of some of the children in the buggy died from her injuries on Friday, November 26th. No further information about the incident is being released.
Names of those involved have not been released. Sheriff Larry Woebbeking says recommended charges against the suspect, Skyler Opelt, now include one count of homicide by negligent use of a vehicle.
The buggy was traveling along County Highway E in the Town of Little Black when Opelt is accused of striking it as he was trying to pass the vehicle. Sheriff’s officials say there was a total of ten people in the buggy, nine of them were injured.
Other potential charges against Opelt include seven counts of operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance causing injury. He was out on probation at the time of the crash, therefor he is jailed on a probation hold.
Officers say charges could change as a result of the investigation or if other victims fail to recover. Officials with Prevail Bank say a benefit account for the victims has been set up, and donations for the family may be deposited at any Prevail location statewide.
