We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago……
When you think of early 70’s prog rock you obviously think of bands like ELP, Yes and Genesis. A band you might not have heard of also released their self-titled debut LP in 1972. The band was called Captain Beyond.
The band’s pedigree was strong. Vocalist Rod Evans came from Deep Purple. Guitarist Larry Rheinhart and bassist Lee Dorman were from Iron Butterfly and drummer Bobby Caldwell played with Johnny Winter.
The music on the LP varies greatly. There is hard-rock and prog…yes…but also jazz and other influences can be heard…sometimes in the same song.
Rheinhart’s guitar work is strong but for me Caldwell’s drumming steals the show.
The band was signed to Capricorn Records and the album is dedicated to Duane Allman. This band certainly isnt the Southern Rock that the label was known for. And they didn’t last long, but this is an entertaining record.
