We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago….today revisiting some hits from the summer of 1972….
Troglodyte-Jimmy Castor Bunch….This funky tune made it to #6 on the pop charts and sold over a half-a-millon copies. It also introduced us to the the Butt Sisters who would get their own tune in 1975. Castor was a New York guy and this song has been sampled by many hip-hop artists.
Rock & Roll Pt 2….I almost hesitated to include this as Glitter was convicted on child sex abuse charges in Viet Nam. But, for awhile this song was everywhere as it became a popular staple at sports stadiums. Glitter had over 25 hit singles in the UK. This was his only US hit climbing to #7.
The Harder They Come-Jimmy Cliff…the title track from the movie soundtrack…the song was recorded specifically for the movie. Trying to mainstream reggae in America.
Nice To Be With You-Gallery…a harmless piece of fluff that was #1 in Canada and was also huge in Chicago…it hit #4 on the American pop chart. Gallery was a Detroit band fronted by Jim Gold. They had a couple of other Top 40 hits with “I Believe In Music” and “Big City Miss Ruth Ann” in late 1972 & early 73.
My Ding-A-Ling-Chuck Berry…there is something really annoying about this piece of sophomoric trash being the only #1 hit for one of the founders of rock & roll. It’s an old song that Berry recorded live at a show in England in February of 1972. Berry was the headlining act at the concert which also featured Slade, Billy Preston, Pink Floyd and George Carlin.
