We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
It was described by one critic as “a total body assault, leaving the mind free to wander in the void where the meaning ought to be”. Noted British music mag New Musical Express called it “one of the greatest rock n roll releases ever”.
It was the 2nd release of 1972 for the band. It was ‘Slayed?” by Slade.
It really is a hoot as Noddy Holder (one of the great rock voices of all-time) leads the band through a series of high energy tunes. You’ll recognize some of these. “Mama We’reAll Crazee Now” was covered in the 80’s by Quiet Riot. “Gudbuy T’Jane” go some radio play. They also give us excellent covers of “Let The Good Times Roll” and “Move Over” which was a hit for Janis Joplin. Holder even sounds a bit like Janis on this one.
Most of the rest is hard and fast although they do slow it down a bit for “Look At Last Nite” which is pretty damn good.
The band is solid…Dave Hill pounds the power chords but can also deliver some clean sounding guitar fills. Jim Lea is a pretty fluid bass player for a band like this (check out his work on Move Over) and Don Powell bashes the drums with elan.
If you need a break from the earnestness of Cat Stevens or Carole King…slap this sucker on and play it loud!
