WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau will be purchasing a second batch of resin to filter PFAS from the city’s drinking water.
Public Works Director Eric Lindman says it’s not an item they need right now, but they will need it before the end of 2023. “After about nine months, or as early as seven months. That means late summer, could be September or October, but it will be this year.”
The price tag for the resin comes to about $710,000. Lindman notes that the latest tests results show the water being delivered to customers is at about eight parts per trillion of PFAS, meaning they’re still good for a few months. But, the order needs to be placed now so that it is ready when they do see a breakthrough to more than 20 PPT.
“We’re purchasing this directly so it’s available. There is a long lead time, so it’s available when we need it. Then we just have to schedule it with the installer,” said Lindman.
The purchase request was made as a sole-source purchase because the city needs to buy the resin from the original company to keep the warranty. Additionally, he notes that they will have to seal up the replaced resin and keep it until proper disposal guidelines have been established, which could bring an additional expense later.
Money for the purchase will be reimbursable through the DNR loan program.
