WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau City Council voted on Tuesday night to officially enter a lawsuit against companies associated with PFAs contamination in the city’s water.
The council unanimously supported the measure with a 10-0 vote and Mayor Katie Rosenberg said that the goal of the lawsuit is to fight for the residents of Wausau and help the city pay for the costs affiliated with solving the problem.
“Residents have told us that we recognize that this costs a lot but why are we responsible for paying for this? We didn’t put the population there. So that’s what we’re trying to do here…we’re trying to fight on behalf of our people here,” Rosenberg said.
No timetable was given on how long the process could take or a rough estimate on what kind of compensation could be received. The Mayor also was unsure about how the compensation would be spent noting that the council would have to make that decision at a later day.
Several manufacturing corporations, including Tyco Fire Products, 3M, DuPont, Dow, Chemours, Corteva, E.I. DuPont de Nemours, and others have been sued by more than a dozen states due to PFAS contamination.
